Virgin America proposes San Francisco-D.C. National nonstops

Virgin America joined the list of airlines seeking flight rights from the Department of Transportation for long-distance flights from Washington's Reagan National Airport.

The airline has proposed two daily round-trip flights between National and San Francisco International, Virgin America's main base.

"With no current service at DCA and as the only airline headquartered here in the Bay Area, Virgin America is uniquely suited to bring low-fare competition to the largest market in the nation previously without nonstop flight service to DCA," said David Cush, President and CEO of Virgin America.

"The move to open up service to DCA by the DOT is to be applauded, and we hope that we can provide meaningful low-fare competition on the route so that Bay Area travelers and businesses can enjoy lower fares and more choice."

Virgin America joins a list of airlines that have applied for the rights to new long-distance flights being allowed at DCA. Once all bids are in, the U.S. DOT will select which airline or airlines will receive rights to the newly-available long-distance flights.

Four new long-distance flights are being added to the airport's cap, though those are open only to airlines with little or no current presence at DCA. Additionally, DCA's four biggest airlines -- American, Delta, United and US Airwyas -- are each being permitted to convert one current "within perimeter" round-trip flight into one that's exempted from the airport's 1,250-mile flight limit.
