FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — American Airlines said that passenger traffic rose 6 percent and planes were fuller in February than they were a year ago.
Paying passengers flew 9.15 billion miles last month, compared with 8.63 billion miles a year earlier. Miles flown is the standard measurement of airline traffic.
International traffic grew by 8.6 percent, while domestic traffic increased 4.4 percent.
American increased passenger-carrying capacity by 4.7 percent from a year earlier. Airlines usually boost capacity by adding flights or using bigger planes on some routes.
With traffic growing faster than capacity, the average flight was 75.8 percent full in February, up 1 percentage point in a year.
American did not release figures for revenue per seat mile, a key measurement of pricing power that many airlines release each month.
American is owned by AMR Corp. The airline and the parent company filed for bankruptcy protection Nov. 29.
