Norwegian Cruise Line unveils winter itinerary for next ship
January 6, 2012

Norwegian Cruise Line's next ship, the Norwegian Breakaway, will spend most of its first winter sailing from New York to the Bahamas and Florida.

The line today announced the 4,000-passenger vessel, which debuts in May 2013, will operate a series of 25 seven-night cruises to the region starting on Oct. 13, 2013. The ship also will sail two 12-night Southern Caribbean itineraries out of New York on Jan. 5 and 19, 2014, along with two short "Weekend Escape" cruises on Jan. 17 and 31, 2014.

As previously announced, the Norwegian Breakaway will spend its first summer sailing out of New York to Bermuda on a seven-night itinerary. At 144,00 tons, the ship will be the largest ever to be based year-round in the city.

The newly announced Bahamas and Florida cruises will depart on Sundays and include stops in Nassau, Bahamas; Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian's private island in the Bahamas; and Port Canaveral, Fla. (gateway to theme park mecca Orlando). The sailings will run through April 27, 2014.

The newly announced 12-night Southern Caribbean cruises include stops in San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Castries, St. Lucia; Bridgetown, Barbados; and Basseterre, St. Kitts.

The cruises go on sale today to members of Norwegian's Latitudes Rewards loyalty program. The general public can begin booking the sailings on Friday.

Currently under construction at a shipyard in Germany, the Norwegian Breakaway was named by a USA TODAY reader in a contest held here at the Cruise Log last year.
