April 17, 2012
AirTran Airways launched its first international flight from Denver International Airport on Monday with the start of new service to Cancun.
Daily service between Denver and Cancun International Airport will run from today through July 7. On July 8, there will be Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday service between the two cities. That schedule will run through Aug. 12. Then on Aug. 13 through Nov. 2, service will be limited to Saturdays and Sundays.
Last week, Southwest Airlines, which now owns AirTran, announced that members of its frequent flier program, Rapid Rewards, will be able to earn bonus points by booking select international flights on AirTran, including the new service between Denver and Cancun.
"This new service is important as it marks AirTran's first international flight from the Mile High city," Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines executive vice president and chief commercial officer and AirTran Airways president, said in a written statement.
"As we continue our integration of AirTran into Southwest, our customers will realize the benefits of our combined network, which is robust from Denver."
Other new international routes on AirTran announced by Southwest recently include San Antonio to Cancun and Mexico City, starting May 24; Austin to Cancun, starting May 25; Orange County to Los Cabos and Mexico City, starting June 3; and Chicago/Midway to Cancun, starting June 3.
